Founding vision of Garden City.

In the depths of the Great Depression, Lewis Hampton Smith demonstrated remarkable optimism for Chatham County’s future. His vision was to create a community where residents could own affordable lots with ample space for vegetable gardens and small livestock—a path to self-sufficiency during challenging economic times.

With this dream in mind, Smith began developing what was initially called “Industrial City Gardens.” The simpler name “Garden City” emerged organically as residents felt the original name was too cumbersome and gave the impression of a factory town rather than the verdant community taking shape.

Garden City officially received its state charter on February 8, 1939. The municipality flourished as new residents arrived, bringing with them energy and commitment to community building. A city council formed, civic organizations established themselves, local businesses opened their doors, and the community spirit that defines Garden City today began to take root.
